Position Summary

MAGNA Media Trials is a unit within Mediabrands that is focused on custom research to address cutting-edge questions in the advertising industry.  The Media Trials team follows the scientific method to craft rigorous experiments that explore new and emerging products, techniques, strategies, and ideas.  If the software or hardware technology we need to conduct an experiment doesn't exist, we build it.  We employ advanced analytics to understand our data and tell compelling stories that are published for the benefit of our clients and the industry at large.  Peruse our published work at https://magnaglobal.com/about-us/media-trials/


As a Data Scientist on the team, you will be empowered to apply your expertise to cutting edge research: design complex methodologies to answer questions with data; craft survey questions to collect high-quality response data, apply various modeling techniques to uncover surprising insights, describe your results and findings to tell a story form the data, collaborate with Software Engineering, Analysts, and Project Managers to efficiently move projects forward, and more… all in a day’s work.  As a small team of high performers, we all wear many hats and are constantly learning new things and pitching in to help out other roles, so there is always something new to do and ways to contribute: there is never a dull moment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a core member of our R&D team alongside Software Engineering and Research Engineering, tackling a variety of client projects, implementing new technology, designing new research methodologies, and solving internal business development problems.
     
  • Adopt and contribute to our team's Azure DevOps process for handling source control and Agile project management.  Apply DevOps and git best practices for coding.  Be willing to learn more about these processes and work to improve our efficiency. 
  • Collaborate with other engineers, analysts, and project managers get work done.  For example, create a Proof-of-Concept research model to test a hypothesis using big data, assist a Research Engineer to operationalize and scale it, and collaborate with Software Engineering to create and deploy a solution and train the end users, while coordinating with Project Managers on planning and task execution throughout.
     
  • Provide expertise of statistics and modeling in the creating of research methodologies.  Help us figure out the right research and methods to answer clients' questions with data.  Perform data cleaning and weighting, analysis, and advanced modeling
     
  • Interpret statistical analysis and results, provide insight and explanation, and translate data into meaningful stories for our marketing teams to present to clients
     
  • Introduce new statistical tools, technology, and programs to improve the teams' capabilities.
     
  • Provide technical guidance to other developers, programmers, and analysts.
     
  • Learn 3rd party survey tools and obtain proficiency with advanced survey logic programming in order to build custom consumer surveys.
     
  • Contribute to the development and design of thought leadership research projects.
     
  • Assist the team as needed with any miscellaneous requests.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM field with a minimum of 3 years experience in a statistical analysis role.
     
  • Strong analytical thinker and problem solver.
     
  • Excellent communication skills – both written & verbal.  Be able to represent our team's analytic capabilities to clients.
     
  • Extremely detail oriented in writing code, code comments, git commits, and other documentation.  Understand you will be passing your code to others for implementation and you want to set them up for success.
     
  • Experience doing statistical analysis using statistical software (e.g. SPSS, SAS, R Studio, BlueSky Statistics, etc.) to apply regressions, decision trees, classification, dimension reduction, time-series analysis, and other advanced techniques.
     
  • Proficient at managing multiple projects at a time in a fast-paced environment, and able to rapidly adapt to changes and tight deadlines.
     
  • Desire to learn and continuously improve.  Learn from mistakes.  Teach others.  Make our team better.  Have fun doing it.
     

 Preferred Skills

 

  • Advanced degree in a STEM field
     
  • 5 years research experience
     
  • Familiarity with modern development techniques including Git, Unit Testing, DevOps, Agile, CRISP-DM

 

  • Experience with a variety of programming languages and the desire to learn more: SQL, PHP, using APIs
     
  • Working knowledge of the digital media advertising ecosystem is a plus (understanding of branding metrics, how ads are bought, etc.).

We also offer a competitive Total Compensation package, including a competitive salary and eligibility for an annual discretionary incentive award or a relevant incentive award.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $115,000.  Where an employee or prospective employee is paid within this range will depend on, among other factors, actual ranges for current/former employees in the subject position, market considerations, budgetary considerations, tenure and standing with the Company (applicable to current employees), as well as the employee’s/applicant’s skill set, level of experience, and qualifications.
